Poor man’s dinner goes wonderfully with our Instant Pot green bean recipe or oven-roasted broccoli steaks recipe to complete the meal! After you give them a try, let us know what you think.
Ingredients You Need to Make This Poor Man’s Hamburger Steaks and Mashed Potatoes Recipe:
- Lean ground beef
- Saltine crackers, crushed
- Milk
- Worcestershire sauce
- Pepper
- Salt
- Italian seasoning
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Paprika
- Red pepper flakes
- All-purpose flour
- Butter
- Diced onion
- Fresh sliced mushrooms
- Garlic, minced
- Condensed cream of mushroom soup
- Fresh parsley
How To Make This Poor Man’s Hamburger Steaks and Mashed Potatoes Recipe:
Begin by preheating the oven to 350 degrees and preparing a 9×13 in pan by spraying it with nonstick cooking spray and then set the pan aside.
Now in a large mixing bowl combine the lean ground beef, crushed saltine crackers, milk, worcestershire sauce, black pepper, salt, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and red pepper flakes (optional) all in the bowl and mix it all together with either your hands or a wooden spoon.
Then, use your hands to form the meat mixture into 8 large patties, remember the patties with shrink a bit when they are cooked.
Once you have the patties formed, place the flour in a shallow bowl and then dredge the burger patties into the flour on both sides.
Now get a large skillet and turn the heat on to medium-high heat and all the 3 tablespoon of butter in the skillet.
After the butter has melted, place as many of the patties into the pan that will fit and let them cook for the patties for about 1-2 minutes per side until they are golden brown.
Place the browned patties into the bottom of the prepared pan.
Don’t worry they don’t need to be cooked all the way through before they are put in the oven.
Continue these steps until all of the patties have been seared on the outside.
Now to make the gravy, add another tablespoon of butter to the same skillet along with the diced onions and mushrooms.
Use your spatula to scrape the browned pieces off the bottom of the pan and continue cooking until the onions are soft, about 3-4 minutes or so.
Then add in the minced garlic and cook everything for another minute.
Now, remove the pan from the heat and add in the cream of mushroom soup, milk, and worcestershire sauce and mix it all together.
Once you have the gravy sauce mixed up, pour it over top of the browned patties in the 9×13 pan and then cover the dish with aluminum foil.
Place the pan in the oven and let it cook for 30-40 minutes or until the meat is cooked all the way through.
Then simply remove the pan from the oven and serve it with some mashed potatoes and sides of your choosing.
But make sure to scoop some of the gravy out of the pan over top of the hamburger steaks and mashed potatoes!
To Make This Slow Cooker Stew Recipe You Will Need:
- 9×13 inch pan (THIS will work great!)
- Large mixing bowl
- Large skillet
- Wooden spoon/spatula
- Nonstick cooking spray
- Aluminum foil
Want NEW freezer meals each month?
I need these easy meals! What is the Difference Between Salisbury Steak and Hamburger Steak?
They are actually quite similar – Salisbury steak usually contains more fillers such as breadcrumbs, sauces, onions and an egg whereas a hamburger steak usually only contains seasonings.
They are very similar and may not have a difference at all depending on the recipe itself. Check out our Salisbury steak recipe.
What is the Most Flavorful Ground Beef?
The more fat there is in the ground beef, the more flavor there will be. Ground chuck usually has 15 to 20% fat. This is a great all-purpose ground beef since it is not as fatty as regular ground beef but still has good flavor.
However for this recipe we highly suggest using a leaner ground beef so you don’t end up with a lot of extra grease when the hamburger steaks are done cooking.

Poor Man’s Hamburger Steaks and Mashed Potatoes Recipe
Ingredients
- 2 pounds lean ground beef
- 1½ cups saltine crackers, crushed (about 1 sleeve of crackers)
- 1 cup milk
- 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon paprika
- dash of red pepper flakes, (optional)
- ¾ cup all-purpose flour, for dredging
- 3 Tablespoons butter
Gravy Ingredients
- 1 Tablespoon butter, if needed
- ½ onion, diced
- 8 ounces fresh sliced mushrooms
- 1 garlic clove , minced
- 2 cans cream of mushroom soup, (10.75 ounces each)
- 1½ cups milk
- ½ Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 2 Tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
Equipment
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Spray a 9×13" baking pan with non-stick cooking spray and set aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, add ground beef, crushed crackers, milk, Worcestershire sauce, and all seasonings.
- Using your hands or a wooden spoon, gently mix all ingredients together.
- Form into 8 patties (remember that they shrink when they cook!).
- Place 3/4 cup flour on a plate or in a bowl. Dredge all of the patties in the flour.
- Place a large skillet over medium-high heat. Melt 3 Tablespoons butter in the skillet. Once hot, add patties to the skillet (you probably won't be able to fit all the patties, so work in batches).
- Sear both sides of the patty until it turns golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side (don't worry about cooking it all the way through – it will finish cooking in the oven).
- Place the patties in the prepared baking pan.
- To make the gravy, use the skillet that you browned the patties in. If needed, add in 1 Tablespoon butter. Turn the heat to medium and add the onions and mushrooms, scraping up the browned bits in the pan from the patties while sauteing the vegetables. After the onions start to turn soft (after 3-4 minutes), add in the garlic and cook for 1 minute more. Remove pan from heat and add in cream of mushroom soup, milk, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well, then pour the gravy evenly over the top of the patties in the pan.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes or until meat is completely cooked.
- Serve topped with fresh parsley, mashed potatoes on the side, and roasted broccoli or green beans for a complete and easy meal!
Notes
- If you don’t use lean ground beef, there will be a lot of grease when these are done cooking. Highly recommend using lean ground beef!
