Recipe Ingredient Notes
To make this Reindeer Chow Recipe, you will need:
- Chex cereal (I used rice Chex, but corn Chex works great too!)
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
- creamy peanut butter
- butter (room temperature)
- vanilla
- powdered sugar
- holiday m&m candies (I used peanut butter m&m’s)
- Reese’s peanut butter cups (I used mini ones)
You can customize this recipe by adding your favorite mix-ins. We recommend the following: salty pretzels (pretzel sticks or mini pretzels work great), white chocolate chips, dash of holiday-colored sprinkles, mini marshmallows, nuts, or Cheerios cereal.
Equipment Needed
For this recipe, you only need a few simple kitchen tools. We recommend using the following equipment:
How to Make Christmas Reindeer Chex Mix
- Pour cereal into large mixing bowl; set aside.
- In another large bowl that is microwave-safe, combine chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter.
- Microwave chocolate, peanut butter, and butter for 1 minute. Remove from microwave and stir, then microwave for 30 more seconds and stir again until the peanut butter mixture is completely smooth (it might only take the first minute of microwaving, every microwave is different).
- Stir in vanilla extract with the chocolate. Pour melted chocolate slowly over Chex Mix cereal in the bowl, stirring carefully to coat cereal pieces evenly with chocolate.
- Pour coated cereal mixture into large gallon Ziplock bag.
- Add powdered sugar into the bag and seal bag closed. Now is the fun part – shake the bag all around to coat all of the cereal well.
- Add Christmas m&m’s and Reese’s peanut butter cups to the Christmas snack mix and you are good to go!
- Store leftovers in a ziploc bag or other airtight container. The Chex mix will last for up to 1 week. Enjoy one of our favorite holiday treats!
Storage Notes
This recipe is best stored at room temperature, and you’ll probably want to eat it the day your make it or maybe the next day. This chex mix recipe is best fresh! Since there’s a cereal mixture, you don’t want it to go stale for your parties.
Edible Gift
Sometimes we will make this festive snack mix and put it in little cellophane bags to give away during Christmas time. You can tie up the bag with a fun bow and hand-deliver this sweet treat to add a little extra magic to someone’s holiday. This reindeer snack mix is a great gift!
Some families will make this Reindeer Chow Chex Mix and put a bowl out on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning for Santa’s reindeer. While I don’t know if it’s recommended reindeer food, I think that is such a fun tradition!
