I am a little bit in love with broccoli salad. Raw broccoli plain has got to be the worst thing in the world, but once you put it with the creamy dressing, olive oil, cheddar cheese, and all the flavor, it suddenly becomes the best food in the world.
These simple ingredients will turn your traditional mayo broccoli salad into the best broccoli salad recipe of your dreams. This salad will be sure to get a 5 star rating from all those who partake in this perfect recipe. Although, the only way to know is to try it out for yourself.
I am not a huge fan of the creamy mayo sauce, so I found another version of this creamy dressing recipe that is much healthier and has less fat. It allows for the crisp texture of the raw veggies to shine through to create the perfect side dish.
If you are looking for a simple, healthy, and classic side dish, this is one I highly recommend. It is an easy recipe to throw together these simple ingredients and it will taste absolutely amazing.
Broccoli Salad Minus the Mayo
There are so many recipes out there for broccoli salads, but they are loaded with mayo and sugar. Some of them also have excessive meal prep which we simply don’t have time for! You need an easy broccoli salad and that is what this is. The cooking process is non-existent because you’re just throwing salad ingredients into a big bowl and mixing. It is a great way to impress family and friends at all your summer bbqs.
I decided to lighten up the recipe so that I could enjoy the delicious flavors without all the guilt – and I did it without using mayo!
If you try this Healthy Broccoli Salad, let me know! I would love to hear in the comments how you made it or if you have any ideas on what you would add to it. This is a great side dish filled with real food. You’re going to be the star of your cookouts at all of the family gatherings!

How to make a healthy broccoli salad
Every broccoli salad starts with broccoli. I usually purchase pre-cut broccoli florets from the produce section just to save time, but you could also chop your own broccoli.
You can cut the broccoli into as big or as small of pieces as you prefer.
Mix the broccoli, apples, onion, and craisins in a bowl.
In a separate bowl, combine the dressing ingredients. Mix the dressing with the broccoli mixture and place it in the fridge. I like it to chill for about 2 hours before I serve it so that the flavors can really meld together.
This dish is so delicious and flavorful!
Do I need to blanch the broccoli for broccoli salad?
Some broccoli salads will have you blanch the broccoli before making the salad (which means to cook it for a short time in boiling water and then cool it down in an ice bath), but for this recipe it’s not needed.
I feel that raw, fresh broccoli is the best in this dish and with all the other ingredients that are added to compliment the broccoli, blanching is not a necessary step. Toss that broccoli in a bowl and move on to the next step!
What dressing goes on broccoli salad?
Many times, the dressing that is on broccoli salad is mayo and sugar.
For this recipe, I am using ingredients that are big on flavor, but lighter on calories and fat.
To make this dressing, you will use:
- apple cider vinegar
- Dijon mustard
- a little bit of canola or olive oil
- a little bit of sugar
- salt and pepper to taste
