Recipe Ingredient Notes
- Italian pork sausage
- 2 Onions: One Yellow and One Red
- BBQ Sauce
- Hamburger Buns
- Butter
- Bacon
- Bread and Butter Pickles
How to make BBQ Pork sloppy joes
- Cook the sausage and onion together in a pan. You’ll want to brown the sausage all the way through until completely cooked. Drain grease well.
- Add about 1.5 cups of the BBQ sauce. You may add more if you like. I usually like it more, but I am a sauce person. There is no such thing as too much sauce. Heat the sauce through.
- Spread the open hamburger buns on a cookie sheet. Spread butter on the inside of each bun and broil for about 1-2 minutes until barely golden. (watch closely so they don’t burn). If you are looking for a shortcut, you could also spray the buns with butter or nonstick cooking spray.
- Remove from oven and spread the meat mixture onto the bottom half of the bun.
- Top with cooked bacon crumbles, onion slices, and pickles.
Cooking Tips
- You can cook the bacon the morning before. If short on time, bacon bits or pre-cooked bacon also work.
- Sweet pickles work well on Sloppy Joes, but some prefer bread and butter pickles.
- If you want a healthier alternative, we recommend using turkey sausage, aka Sloppy Janes. It cooks the same as any other sausage and tastes delicious.
