I am a huge fan of anything I can throw in the slow cooker. I don’t think there is a better feeling than knowing dinner is already taken care of at 10 am.
The house smells delicious and everyone is in a good mood by the time dinner rolls around. The best part about these meatballs is the cheesy surprise inside.
I used a ground turkey instead of beef, to make this recipes, just for health purposes. If you are more of a ground beef person, this recipe would still work, using beef.
how to make slow cooker mozzarella meatballs
Step 1: Preheat your oven to high broil.
Step 2: In a bowl, whisk together milk and eggs until fully combined and it becomes a little frothy.
Step 3: Stir in ground turkey, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Mix until well combined. I used Italian bread crumbs, but any type will work.
Step 4: Cut each cheese stick, into 7 pieces.
Step 5: Roll turkey into 1 inch balls around one piece of cheese and place on a greased cookie sheet. This should make about 20 meatballs.
Step 6: Broil on high for 5-7 minutes or until the outside of the meatballs are golden brown.
Step 7: Transfer to a slow cooker and pour jar of spaghetti sauce on top.
Step 8: Cook on low for 3-4 hours or until meat has cooked through.
Step 9: Serve on top of your favorite whole wheat noodles or zucchini noodles.
If you know someone who can make a picture of raw meat look good, send them my way. Turkey always throws me off because it’s a much different color than the regular ground beef.
After mixing all of the meatball ingredients together I rolled the turkey around a slice of mozzarella cheese (check out my awesome shortcut in the ingredients) and lined them up to be broiled.
why do i broil the meatballs?
The broiling gives your turkey meatballs, a nice crispy, made fresh, meatball taste without all the hassle of deep frying.
Simply broil them in the oven on high for 5-7 minutes (rotating them halfway through), to get a little more crunchy texture to the outside of the meatball.
Throw them in the slow cooker with your favorite sauce, and dinner is done. We served these over whole wheat pasta. We also love serving this with zoodles (zucchini noodles).
could this be a freezer meal?
This recipe could most definitely be made into a freezer meal. You could also prepare and cook it, then store it in the freezer, or keep the meatballs raw and place them in a freezer.
Either way would work. We recommend not making the noodles until you are ready to eat. Noodles don’t freeze and thaw as well as meat.
