While we were in Hawaii, we ate some of the most AMAZING foods. One of our favorite places was this little Mexican restaurant that served churro fries as a dessert.
They were the tastiest fries I think I’ve ever had. I immediately got to work recreating them when I got home, and they turned out pretty darn good.
how to make churro fries
Don’t let churros intimidate you. You are going to be surprised at how easy they are to make. Let’s begin.
Step 1: In a deep skillet over medium heat, pour canola oil (it should be about 1-2 inches deep).
For this particular recipe, we do recommend using canola oil for best results and taste. If you use another oil, the taste will be a little funky, and they might not get as crunchy. Canola oil works best for this recipe.
Step 2: Mix together 1 1/2 Tablespoons sugar and cinnamon and set aside.
I did this, using a plate. I found it easy to move the churros over to the cinnamon and sugar quickly, when it was a plate. A bowl limits you a little more, so I have just found the most success using a plate for this step.
Step 3: In a small bowl, mix together 1/2 Tablespoon sugar, bisquick, and hot water until it forms a soft dough. Spoon dough into a piping bag (or large ziploc bag). Cut off the end (or a corner) so it makes a small, circular hole.
Step 4: Pipe 4-5 5″ strips into the oil, using a pair of scissors to cut between each “fry”. You could use your fingers, but you also run the risk of burning your hands. We recommend scissors, for safety.
Step 5: Let them cook for about 60-90 seconds (they cook fast, so I wouldn’t recommend doing more than 5 at a time), then carefully remove from oil and place on paper towels to drain the oil.
Repeat until all dough is gone. Again, I wouldn’t recommend leaving these out of sight. Stay by them while cooking, because they could burn quickly.
Step 6: Sprinkle the fries generously with the cinnamon and sugar mixture, and serve warm with honey butter dipping sauce.
I bring them over from the oil, straight onto the plate of cinnamon and sugar.
